Getting Colour in the Kitchen

Traditionally, kitchens are designed with natural materials or painted in neutral colours. Black, white, beige, etc, are usually the colours of choice. While neutral colours seem like the safer option, adding a dash of colour to your kitchen can really transform the space! Depending on how brave you are, you could give your kitchen a complete make over in colour, or just add licks of paint here and there. Accessories, chairs and appliances can also add some colour to the room. Here are some awesome examples of how good colour in the kitchen can look!

A Drop of Yellow

Where: The blinds and the breakfast bar chairs.

Yellow: Freshness, happiness, positivity, clarity, energy, optimism, enlightenment.

Why we love it: This is an easy and cost effective way to add colour to your kitchen without having to commit to a massive change to cabinetry or walls. The simple addition of colour in the chairs and blinds turns, what could be a pretty dull kitchen into something warm and sunny.

A Shade of Blue

Where: The cabinets and splashback.

Blue: Associated with sky and sea, depth and stability. Calming.

Why we love it: Blue is beautifully bold! Here, it takes up a lot of the kitchen, but works really well. It's inviting, fun and different. The timber and polished concrete complement the blue really well too.

A Dash of Red

Where: Splashback and walls.

Blue: Love, passion, fire, desire, heat and sexuality.

Why we love it: "No colour is as territorial as red. It stakes a claim." Derek Jarman. Red is a statement colour. It's for the fun, and brave. The contrast of the brick/plum red and candy red works well off-set by the white cabinets.  It's an inviting kitchen, with plenty of sass for the sausages to be sizzled in!

A Palette of Paint

Where: Cabinets and accessories.

Red, coral, orange and yellow: Joy, sunshine, happiness, success and creativity.

Why we love it: The combination of these colours screams the tropics! You can almost taste the cocktails and smell the coconut tanning oil when you look at it. Not only do these colours go really well together, but they are associated with feelings of joy, happiness, success and creativity which are fantastic emotions to kick off your day with! The hanging light looks like a coral which also works well in the unobvious tropical theme. It's also weaved the colour red through accessories like the couch cushion, kettle, mugs and dish cloth.

A Trickle of Turquoise

Where: Walls, cabinets, splashback and accessories.

Turquoise: Refreshing, calming, balance, clarity and cleanliness.

Why we love it: Aside from the fact that turquoise is my favourite colour, it provides a clean, refreshing and calming atmosphere to this kitchen. The space is my no means news, however they've managed to pull off a very modern look with their colour of choice. The bohemian splashback complements the walls and cabinetry well turning it into an alternative modern/boho style. The splash of yellow works well too!

6 Ways to Create Extra Benchtop Space

4-60-Port-Road-HR-6-copy.jpg

Ever cooked a meal and feel like you're playing some sort of game as you move through all the obstacles on your counter just to get what you need? A game that's no fun of course. There's something really satisfying about having a clear kitchen benchtop. If you're in need of some extra counter space, read on! Here are 6 ways to create extra kitchen benchtop space...

1. Sink covers

These were an absolute godsend when I lived in a pokey apartment in Uruguay. Although, it wasn't actually a sink cover - just an ordinary chopping board. Sink sliders, or covers, come in all shapes, sizes and materials (plastic, wood, steel) and in different textures too (wood for chopping, steel for drying, etc.) Sink covers are a cheap and easy way to instantly create extra benchtop space. Make sure they fit snug, so they don't wobble!

2. Single sink

Personally, I like to have one sink for washing and one for rinsing. But if you're shy of space, use a sink cover to create additional space to prepare on. Alternatively, you could look at having it removed altogether! At least with a sink cover you can use the sink if you need to.

3. Pull-out benchtop

If you've got a small kitchen with minimal benchtop space, try a pull-out benchtop. These temporary benchtops are concealed and look like an ordinary drawer. Once pulled out, they provide additional benchtop space to chop, dice and splice! Make sure it's built sturdy, so it doesn't wiggle under pressure. It also needs to be built to handle some weight.

4. Pack away appliances

The cheapest way to create extra benchtop space! It only takes 21 days to achieve - once you've cemented the habit. Use empty cabinet space to pack away appliances you don't use every day. Even the ones you do use every day can be packed away if you need the space. The kettle and coffee machine are the only appliances you'll find on my benchtop.

5. Island life

You might not have benchtop space but if you've got the floor space you could build an island bench or simply place a table there for extra benchtop space. The island doubles up as an area to sit, socialise or share a meal with family or friends.

6. Declutter!

Clear some drawers for iPads, speakers, chargers, etc. Buy a nice bowl to chuck any loose items that constantly appear on your benchtop. Use canisters to sort any breakfast items that might live on your benchtop.  READ: Chaos Control Tips

5 Chaos Control Tips for your Home

"My house isn't messy. It's custom designed by a three year old." One of the many classic quotes about untidy homes. And you know what? In a world as busy as ours, it's okay to be a lil' untidy. But, in case you're looking for ways to keep your home tidy in 2018 here are some chaos control tips for you...

1. Baskets and Boxes

Baskets or boxes (particularly in the kid's rooms) make it easy to keep things tidy. Use different boxes for different types of toys so it's easy to find what they're looking for. Baskets and boxes make it easy for you and the kids to tidy up after playtime.

2. Use clutter to decorate

Think about household items that are charming to display. Books for example can either be dust collectors in a cupboard or under your bed, or they can be displayed on a book shelf. Open shelving with cups and bowls is another way to turn cluttered cupboards into storage with character!

3. Create a 'drop off' space

One of my nasty habits is dumping my stuff on the nearest surface I can find when I come home from work.  The victim is usually my dining room table which means dinners are usually on our laps in the lounge instead of the dining table! If this sounds at all familiar to you, you might want to create a 'drop off space'. A space either at your front door or anywhere else close to your home's entrance where you can drop off your day's bulk.

4. Use unused spaces

Have a think about the areas or rooms in your home that aren't used very much and send some clutter there. Spare rooms, top shelves, bottoms drawers. The idea is to keep the areas and spaces you frequently use, neat and tidy. Whatever ever isn't used often can be out of site. Christmas trees and decorations, light bulbs, baking items are just some of these things.

1. Beer Can Chook

BBQs are typically Australian. So is beer! And a delicious Aussie chook is the best way to pair the two. It's an easy recipes that serves for and takes about 1 hour and 35 mins (with 10 minutes prep time) You'll need:

  • 1 chicken
  • 2 tablespoons of oil
  • 2 tablespoons of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of black pepper
  • A squeeze of lemon
  • 3 tablespoons of spiced rub of your choice
  • 1 beer can

Prep the chicken as you usually would, removing all giblets inside. Wash it and pat it dry. Rub in seasoning, salt, pepper and lemon. Open the beer can and take a few big sips! The can needs to be half full.  Open the chicken legs and place the chicken around the beer can. Place chicken on the BBQ or Weber for an 1.35 hours until internal temperature reaches 73 degrees Celsius (80 degrees in the thigh) or until the juices run clear.

2. Rum and Coke Ribs

Getting a bit more Caribbean with this one. But who doesn't love sweet and sticky ribs on a barbie? Acclaimed Chef Peter Evans came up with this wicked rum and coke rubs recipe:

  • 1 cup of rum
  • 2 cans of Coca Cola
  • 300ml of tomato sauce
  • Tabasco sauce a good dash or two
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 4 tablespoons hoisin sauce

4. BBQ'd Garlic and Parmesan Asparagus

Something for the veggos. These guys only take 15 mins to prep and cook and are suitable as a side for meat eaters and vegetarians. Get as many asparagus spears as you need for your guests. Break the tough bits of the asparagus off the bottom and lay in a shallow dish. Pour a small amount of boiling water over the asparagus to cover only the bottom of the dish. Pour salt over the asparagus and place in the microwave for two minutes. Remove from the microwave and pour out the water. Then, cover in garlic, pepper, garlic salt (if you have) and Parmesan cheese. BBQ for 10 mins until char-grilled. You can also wrap them in ham if you like.

6. Shmooshed BBQ Potatoes

I don't think Christmas would feel like Christmas without potatoes. And if you're skipping the roast why not chuck them on your BBQ instead? Wash and peel as many potatoes as you need or use baby potatoes. Parboil then until they're soft. Cover them in olive oil, salt and pepper and place on the BBQ for 29 mins. Shmoosh them down to help them cook quicker (and because it's fun to do).

Revamping a Kitchen on a Budget

Do you get dollar signs in your eyes when you think about revamping your kitchen? Of course, a full revamp may be costly but there are loads of cost effective changes you can make to give your kitchen a re-fresh. If you're on a budget or only have a couple hundred dollars to spend - this blog is for you! Here are our tips and tricks for revamping a kitchen on a budget...

Put Up Some Art

A super easy way to re-fresh your kitchen on a budget is my adding some wall art. There are a lot of really sweet quotes and kitchen sayings you can dot around any empty wall space you have. Or if you want to go for a more artsy look - try a vintage poster.

Paint the Walls

Probably the most cost effective way to re-vamp your kitchen is by giving it a lick of paint. Generally kitchens aren't too 'wall heavy' which means you don't need much paint. A large tin of paint is around $100. So you could get away with a whole new look for only $100. Cut your cost down even further by painting it yourself. Keep it cool with a grey or light blue or make it pop with red, turquoise or green.

Paint the Cabinets

If you'd prefer not to paint the walls, or want to keep them neutral, paint the cabinets and/or island instead. It's a great way to add some colour to your kitchen and isn't a massive commitment if you decide you want to change it. This would also cost between $100 - $200 depending on how many cabinets you have to paint. Purchase some matching display items or crockery to complement the new cabinets.

Kitchen Pendant Lighting

If you've got an island bench - upgrade your lighting to pendant lights. Depending on the length of the island you could have three to four. Check out more kitchen lighting ideas here.

Mosaic Splashback

If you've got around $400 to spend you could add a mosaic splashback to your kitchen. It'll not only add colour and re-fresh your kitchen but it will add interest too. Go for fun and colourful or glitsy grey depending on what sort of re-fresh you're after.

Ergonomic Kitchen Design Tips

Adelaide-Outdoor-Kitchens-Netherby-2-02.jpeg

Standing on your tippy toes to reach a wine glass? Bending down too far to get a heavy pot? If you're stretching, climbing or bending in your kitchen on a regular basis you may need to look at your kitchen's ergonomics. A few design changes and product additions can improve the ergonomics of your kitchen. Here are some ergonomic kitchen design tips to get you started...

Raise the Dishwasher

The most common kitchen ergonomic blunder is the height of the dishwasher. It takes a good few minutes to pack a dishwasher, which puts strain on your back and knees. There are some awesome raised dishwasher designs, some of which are DIY. Some homeowners manage to raise the dishwasher themselves by adding a piece of plywood within a cabinet to hold the dishwasher. We'd recommend getting a plumber or carpenter in to assist you with this.

Ergonomic Design Tips - Adelaide Outdoor Kitchens

Sprung Flooring

Whether it's waiting for that pot to boil or catching up with friends or family around the kitchen island, we spend a lot of time standing in our kitchens. Spring flooring absorbs shock, giving a softer feel. Sprung floors are often used for rooms where physical activity takes place, but you can also install them in your homes too. If you spend a lot of time standing around your kitchen why not add some additional comforts: a mini herb garden, music or a book reading station.

Ergonomic Design Tips - Adelaide Outdoor Kitchens

Raise the Rangehood

If you're tall, you may be stooping down to stir at your stove. Instead of straining your neck and back, try raising the rangehood a bit higher. Rangehoods have a maximum distance allowance. Check what yours is and lift yours as high as you can to avoid strain.

Ergonomic Design Tips - Adelaide Outdoor Kitchens

Bottom Freezer Fridge

Ever pulled a heavy piece of frozen food from your top freezer and dropped it on your toes? I have. A bottom freezer fridge is more ergonomic as you can crotch down to grab what you need from the freezer. Instead of reaching up or overhead to putt it down.

Ergonomic Design Tips - Adelaide Outdoor Kitchens

Install a Wall Oven

If I had to choose one thing to correct in my kitchen, it would be the oven placement. Reaching down to pull hot stuff out of the oven is not only bad for your back, but also dangerous. If the tray is heavy and hot, there is a good chance you may drop it. A wall oven allows you to insert and remove trays of cooked food as a comfortable and natural level - not straining your back or arms.

Ergonomic Design Tips - Adelaide Outdoor Kitchens

Plan Your Storage Cupboards

Carefully plan where your kitchen items will go. Keep the lighter stuff in the higher cupboards and the heavier stuff in the bottom cupboards. Glasses and mugs should be as close to eye level as possible, so you're not stretching to get them.Ergonomic Design Tips - Adelaide Outdoor Kitchens
