We all want to be more environmentally friendly, but where do we start? At home, of course! And there’s no better place to begin than your humble kitchen. All those plastics, food waste, and single-use packaging are destroying our beautiful planet.
So what can you do to make your kitchen greener and more eco-friendly? Read on to find out how!
Wrap it up
Love the convenience of plastic wrap, but feel guilty using it? There are much more environmentally friendly ways to cover up your leftovers.
Use beeswax paper wraps and waste-free bento boxes for the kids’ lunchboxes. They’re reusable so you’ll save money, and they come in all sorts of cute patterns and prints!
Grow your own veggies
Say goodbye to plastic packaging and grow your own vegetables. Have a big backyard? Use raised planter boxes to start a veggie patch.
A little tight on space? Not a worry – you can still plant veggies and herbs in pots. Pick colourful pots with charming patterns to add to your décor.
Start a compost bin
You may not think twice about throwing away that half-eaten apple. It will decompose in the rubbish, right? Not necessarily. Waste needs oxygen to decompose. And your apple won’t get enough air buried under all that garbage. Instead, it will sit and release greenhouse gas, which contributes to climate change.
Avoid it all by starting a compost bin. Get the kids involved and start a worm farm. Not only will you save the environment, but your garden will look lush as well!
Recycle soft plastics
We all have one hidden under the kitchen sink – a plastic shopping bag full of other plastic bags. You know you shouldn’t throw them away; they do take up to 500 years to decompose after all, but what should you do with them?
Throw them all into a strong paper bag and head down to your local supermarket. You will find a recycling point to put your soft plastics in.
Your plastics will then be turned into park benches and garden furniture. So make the world a prettier place, and recycle those old bags!
