Make Christmas easy: Christmas BBQ Tips

So, you put your hand up to host Christmas this year. Seemed like a pretty good idea at the time, right?

Now it's crunch time. You've got guests to invite, decorations to put up, gifts to buy – it's all too much. At least lunch doesn't have to be hard.

Make Christmas easy with our simple Christmas BBQ tips, and spend more time out of the kitchen.

Add a little Christmas spirit

Christmas isn't just another BBQ. It's a chance to get together with family and make memories. So make this BBQ special by adding a little festive cheer.

Decorate your outdoor dining set with candles, Christmas décor and pre-made platters. It doesn't have to be much – less is more, after all!

Put up some fairy lights around your outdoor kitchen area. This will add ambience and distinguish your Christmas BBQ from a regular BBQ. Chuck on some Christmas music for a festive atmosphere.

Avoid the Christmas waste and use cloth Christmas tablecloths and napkins. Just throw them in the wash when you’re finished, ready for next year.

Marinate your meat before Christmas

Cooking the ultimate Christmas lunch doesn't have to be an ordeal. And simple doesn't mean that it won't be impressive – all you need is a little planning.

Choose meals that can be prepared ahead of time, and marinate your meat a day or two before the big day. That way, all the hard work is already done – all you need to do is throw the flavourful cuts onto the grill and serve.

Try our famous rum and coke ribs or mustard and citrus prawns if you're stuck on ideas.

Pick easy side dishes

The last thing you want on Christmas is to be stuck inside, making complicated sides to go with your lunch. Take the pressure off by choosing side dishes that are quick and simple to put together.

From salads and veggies to cob loaf and curried eggs, there are plenty of easy dishes to choose from. Give our easy roasted butternut couscous salad a go, or this sweet and spicy grilled eggplant. And the best part? They can be made ahead of time!

And remember – it's your Christmas BBQ, so don't feel restricted by tradition. You can serve whatever you like. In fact, dishing up something simple and unconventional is not only easier for you, but it will add a fun twist to Christmas lunch.

Choose fast desserts

Another Christmas pudding? No, thank you. Christmas down under is far too hot for something so rich and heavy. Choose a quick, easy dessert instead.

Desserts don't need to be complicated to taste good – in fact, some of the simplest dishes are the most delicious! This Christmas hedgehog slice or easy tiramisu is sure to have your guests asking for more.

For an even easier option, ask your guests to bring a dessert with them. People are more than happy to help with Christmas, and you can spend more time out of the kitchen.

If you do end up running out of time, don't feel bad about skipping dessert altogether. A Christmas barbie is all about the grill. With tasty sides and great company, you won't even miss the sweets.
