Do you feel that chill in the air? Autumn is officially here, which means that winter isn’t too far behind. Time to chuck on your jumper, rug up on the couch, and best of all, fire up that fireplace.
There's nothing better than curling up in front of a rustic fireplace, enjoying its comforting warmth, on a cold winter’s night. Thanks to their homely charm and tasteful appearance, fireplaces are a stunning addition to any style of home - whether that be contemporary, mid-century or traditional.
Fireplaces come in a variety of fuel types. Of course, there’s the classic wood-fired fireplaces. They provide an exceptional quality of heat - that’s because they operate on the principle of radiant heat, which warms your home faster and more efficiently.
But if you value efficiency and convenience, then electric or gas fireplaces are for you. No more chopping firewood outside in the cold, or spending countless hours trying to keep the fire alight. A simple touch of a button is all you need to keep your warm toasty and warm.
So which fireplace is right for you - gas, or electric? What are the advantages? Read on to learn more about electric VS gas fireplaces - which should you choose.
Aesthetics
While you’ll never mistake an electric or gas fireplace for a true-blue traditional wood-burning one, both come in a wide range of beautiful, eye-catching designs to complement any living space.
Both fireplace options will add a touch of elegance and serenity and will be a stunning backdrop for all your family memories.
However, if it’s real flames you’re after, then consider a gas fireplace. Unlike electric fireplaces, a gas model produces real flames that you can see and feel. Electric fireplaces, while still producing heat, project an image of a burning log.
Energy efficiency
The energy efficiency of your fireplace will ultimately depend on the size and model you choose. But generally, a gas fireplace with an output of 1.5-2kW (1500-2500W) will work well for a small to medium-sized room of 20-30 per square meter. For a larger space, choose a fireplace with an output of 3kW or more.
Electric fireplaces, on the other hand, emit slightly less heat than gas ones. That’s because they use fans to force out the heat made by electricity rather than real flames. So you’ll need a more powerful output, like 2-2.5kW (2000-2500W), to heat the same small to medium-sized room.
Safety
Both fireplace models are safe to use and operate within the home but there are a couple of things to consider.
Gas fireplaces have glass doors that house the unit. Because gas models become hot quickly, these doors can burn any little fingers that are brave enough to touch them. And like any other gas appliance, your gas fireplace can leak gas if not maintained properly. Most units have a gas shut off valve in case of any dangerous leaks.
Electric fireplaces have fewer safety hazards. But just like any space heater, they can cause electrical fires if they are damaged. Many new units have shut-off features that turn on when it becomes overheated.
