Bathroom colour ideas with Clare from Adelaide Outdoor Kitchens

Colour is an essential element for any design - especially in a bathroom. It can be the difference between creating a peaceful sanctuary to wash away the day's stress or a disappointing eyesore.

Having worked as a bathroom selection consultant for 11 years, Clare from Adelaide Outdoor Kitchens has extensive knowledge about the art of bathroom colour and design. We picked her brain to get the best bathroom colour ideas for your bathroom.

When designing your perfect bathroom, Clare believes that your tiling is the first thing you should consider. "The tiles are a blank canvas you can build on," she explains. That's why Clare always suggests tiles be in neutral tones. While other bathroom design elements can be changed or replaced without too much fuss, the tiles are the foundation of your bathroom - and an expensive item to replace.

Over recent years, white and grey tones have dominated the bathroom landscape. And while these neutral colours remain a staple in homes across Australia, it still pays to look a little deeper at your other colour options.

"Many people go to show homes to see the latest in bathrooms. They see white and grey tones, but their colour tones aren’t white and grey."

Clare recommends looking at the colours and shades you already have in your home and incorporating those into your bathroom. Just remember to also consider the flooring that your tiles will butt onto. Otherwise, the effect can be very jarring, as it disrupts the story you create in your home. "I'm a great believer in colour flow through your home. I think that is the key to superior interior design."

Few things can have the same visual impact that intense colour can bring. And while this can be an effective tool for creating some interest in your design, it can also throw off the balance of your space - if you’re not careful.

Clare suggests that you keep bold colours for things you can easily change later, such as the basin (which you can switch up for one of our polished concrete basins) rather than more permanent fixtures, such as the tiles.  “Every bathroom has a hero or foundation piece, such as a vanity. These are a great place to incorporate colour,” Clare explains.
