How to design the ultimate family kitchen

It’s not just a kitchen - it’s the heart of the home, a place to make memories and share precious moments with the kids. So when it comes to renovating or designing your family kitchen, it's understandable that you might be feeling overwhelmed - after all, this is not a room you want to stuff up.

Designing the ultimate family kitchen will depend on your family’s needs and the ages of your children. Choose a design that will evolve with your family as they grow and can adapt to your ever-changing lifestyles. But how do you do that?

Read on to learn how to design the ultimate family kitchen.

How much space does a family kitchen need?

Ideally, a family kitchen is more than six square meters. Anything smaller than this won’t leave much room for growing children. But according to kitchen experts, a good size for a family kitchen is 17 to 40 square meters.

A kitchen for a family of three or more should have 2.7 meters of base cabinet storage and roughly 3.3 meters of wall cupboards. This should give you enough storage to accommodate your family for years to come.

What’s the best layout for a family kitchen?

The most ideal layout for a family kitchen are:

  • U-shaped and island layout - this allows you to face outwards and talk to your guests while you clean the dishes (as well as keep an eye on the little ones!)

  • G-shaped and island layout - this has an attached ‘island’ that can double as a breakfast bar or snack space

  • L Shape and island layout - an open planned kitchen that allows for more than one cook at a time

Do you need a kitchen island?

Not only does a kitchen island give you more counter space, but it also acts as a natural break between the high-traffic, busy cooking zones and the laid-back, relaxed living and dining areas. It’s also a handy spot for family breakfasts and lunches.

Choose an island that has a projected surface and seating on one side. Bar stools will tuck in neatly under the ledge, saving space and creating a streamlined look.

If possible, add a dishwasher and sink to your kitchen island, so you’re not isolated from the family during mealtimes.

Choose practical, easy to clean materials

A lot happens in your kitchen - breakfast time, after-school snacks, homework sessions and fancy dinner parties with friends. You need a kitchen that’s easy to clean with materials that won’t stain if the occasional orange juice is spilled.

So consider the following practical materials for your kitchen:

  • Metro tiles for your splashback

  • A Composite stone, granite or polished concrete benchtop

  • Ceramic tile flooring - but if you prefer the timber look, choose faux vinyl flooring.
